Chloe News (most recent first)

8/30/06
Starts kindergarten!.
9/22/04
Starts dance class with Kye. A little trepidatious at first, but loves it.
9/1/04
Moves into the next class at nursery schoolwith teacher Heidi.
6/22/04
Started nursery school at Claremont Day with teacher Rosalinda.
6/19/04
Has a great vocabulary. Knows her letters. Likes to sing (particularly the alphabet song). Is getting ready to start nursery school. Up to this point, attended several playgroups and a signing group weekly.
12/24/03
Very verbal. A happy child, finding her own way, but still follows whatever her big sister does. Can sometimes play as a peer with Kye.
6/25/03
Happily enjoys the backyard wading pool, playing today with Kye, and Robin and Molly from next door. Uses lots of stock phrases, including "I want _______ RIGHT NOW!" (but does know to say, "please," if reminded...).
5/9/03
Very, very verbal, commenting on all the things happening around her. Taking regular, somewhat longer naps. Looks forward to "play group" (Mondays) and "singing group" (Wednesdays); doesn't sing during the latter, but you can catch her singing the songs by herself just out of the blue.
4/7/03
Chloe's learned how to scale out of her crib, and has done it several times. Learning to correctly use pronouns, e.g., "change me!," instead of "change you."
2/18/03
Says "Look Mommy. Kye did it."
1/27/03
Has finally learned how to pronounce her own name! Hasn't much attached to a stuffed animal, like Kye did with Oakie, but does like Yoko cat and her duck. Knows the sounds that many things make ("woof woof," "moo," etc.), but for some reason anything she doesn't know (and most people), say "beep beep." Favorite books now "Harold and the Purple Crayon," "Curious George's Opposites," and "Go, Dog. Go." A very assertive child... "read it!" being a favorite expression, as she climbs up on you clutching a book. (Also very fond of "Again!" when you finish.) Lots and lots of two-word sentences, though she tends to reduce long words to their endings, e.g., "popcorn" is "corn," and both "(go) upstairs" and "(go) downstairs" are the interchangeable, "dairs!" Has a problem pronouncing the "tr" in truck, in a way that argues caution in social settings...
1/7/03
Loves to talk. Comments that things are "funny". Says "please," "thank you," and "welcome," often at the appropriate times. Talks about people she knows, including friends. Calls herself "Chlole" (KLO-lee).
8/27/02
Says many words now: frog, flower, fly, paper, Mama, Digadad, Daddy, Popop, eyes, hair, nose, and most importantly, Duck! Loves ducks. Makes cat and dog noises when she sees them. Knows many other words. Runs, stands on her head, puts hats on her head, and loves to dance.
6/3/02
Says something like "there!" in imitation of her Mom's "there!", at the appropriate times.
5/27/02
Can go and fetch specific objects if asked: Groovy Girl dolls, and several Sandra Boynton books.  Will bring "Barnyard Dance" and "One Two Three" to have them read to her.  Recognizes pictures of yellow ducks, and calls them something resembling "duck!" Kisses people when asked if she would.
5/10/02
Answers "Mmmmm..." to "What does the cow say?" and pops her mouth when asked "What does the fish say?" Walks more confidently.
4/30/02
Picks up her jacket, walks 7-8 steps across the floor, gives it to Dad, and holds her arms up for it to be put on her.
4/25/02
First steps!  Chloe stands, then walks 4-5 steps across the carpet.  Twice!
Now happy with lots of types of foods, and can drink milk and water from a straw.  More teething, with associated unhappiness.
March 4th: Chloe turns one year old! Phew!
February 2002
Learns to clap and wave, and even understand the words for them. Getting more talkative and responsive. Tries to climb everywhere. Prefers finger food to being spoonfed.
1/8/02
Now crawling everywhere at considerable speed, and pulling herself up and cruising.  Not yet trying to stand, but very good at sitting down without mishap.  Up to three solid meals per day, and seems to get the idea of the sippy cup.
12/13/01
First successful attempt at sitting up herself: rolled from back to front, then scrunched up to lever herself up to a sit.  More consonant sounds (particularly a repeated staccato "Dah!") and she can whistle!  Can also pull herself to standing, and seems to be thinking about trying to cruise.  All four front teeth are through--and she's grinding them! Working on crawling--can go backwards quickly, and is working on going forward.
12/4/01
Fourth pediatrician visit: weight is up to 19 lbs. 2 oz., height is 29 inches. Still above average for full-term babies at this age.  Gets her shots, stoically.
11/10/01
First tooth visible.  Now quite happily sitting up for long periods, and can pull herself up to her knees, hanging on the side of the crib.  Loves to play with her crib busy board.  Can flip from back to stomach on the bed, and shimmy forward on her back by wriggling.
Early October
Starts sitting up.  Lots of new mouth sounds.
7/5/01
Third pediatrician visit: weight is up to 14 lbs., 2 oz.  Length is 25.25 inches, head circumference is 41.5 cm.  Full term percentiles are 67th, 83rd and 60th percentiles, respectively, for babies who aren't premature, but full term!  Got four shots, but put up with that as best as could be expected.
6/27/01
Chloe visits the developmental specialist.  While she needs to work a bit on head control, our little sausage (she's getting quite baby fat) scored very well on a variety of indicators, with responsive smiling, visual tracking, and waving of the little arms.  Looks great!  Chloe's now sleeping 4-8 hours a night.
5/22/01
Chloe doubles her birthweight: 10 lbs., 6 oz.
5/7/01
Second visit to the pediatrician: weight is up to 9 lbs., 1 oz.  Length is 22.5 inches, head circumference is 37.8 cm.  If she were full term, this would place her in 10th, 50th and 25th percentiles, respectively.
4/15/01
Chloe joins the family out for brunch--spends the whole time asleep in her car seat.
4/10/01
Second visit to the pediatrician: weight is up to 6 lbs., 9.5 oz.
4/3/01
Visits apnea clinic--gets to come off the caffeine.  Weighs 6 lbs., 1 oz.
3/27/01
First visit to the pediatrician: weight is up to 5 lbs., 9.5 oz., so it looks good on the weight gain front.
3/23/01
Chloe comes home!
3/20/01
Chloe regained her birthweight (5 pounds, 3 ounces) as of today.
3/17/01
Chloe at almost two weeks Kye as an infant
Chloe at almost two weeks; her sister (photo from August, 1998) is on the right.
3/15/01
Chloe will likely be home by mid-next week (Wednesday?), but will be sent home with a monitor. The monitor, which she'll have for 2-3 months, will monitor heart beat and breathing; Chloe has shown evidence of apnea, which is a function of the as-yet incomplete development of her nervous system.
3/13/01
Chloe is still in step-down, but looking more and more like a "take home" baby. Dad fed her all her milk, and she was more enthusiastic at it (but then decided she'd not been sufficiently burped, and ejected a good portion of what she'd eaten, alas). She spent a lot of the time looking around, such as she can, with her as-yet unfocused baby eyes. Chloe's doctors are Kumar, Archer and Runkle.
3/11/01
The Grays visit their granddaughter.
3/9/01
Chloe moves to step-down tonight, leaving the NICU and crossing the hall to a room for less critical babies... moving on up in the world!
Chloe is drinking all her milk at feedings (fortified breast milk).
3/8/01
Chloe is taken off the IV.
3/4/01
Chloe is born was born at 4:25 p.m., Sunday March 4th, 2001, in the 33rd week or so of the pregnancy, at 5 lbs., 3 oz., and 18 and a half inches! Cried when delivered, and never required breathing assistance (though was given increased oxygen under a hood for some hours). Apgar scores are 9/9, tying her older sister.
